Denis Diderot was instrumental in bringing the 24 volume Encyclopaedia Dictionaire Raisonne des Sciences, des Arts et des Metiers into print. He didn't like this painting as he thought it made him look like an old fool.

This painting shows the desire of women's fashions of the time to be more natural, as opposed to the artificiality which preceeded the revolution.

Gone are the high powdered wigs; here the hair hangs almost as nature intended, and the dress follows the lines and contours of the body. Indeed some ladies took this new found freedom in showing off the natural form a little further and gave nature a helping hand by damping down the front of their dresses. Is this an early version of the wet T-shirt? It is said that this was the cause of the death of Josephine, who caught a severe chill while out walking in the gardens of Malmaison.
