Pierre Joseph Proudhom et ses enfants by Gustave Courbet Pierre Joseph Proudhom et ses enfants by Gustave Courbet. This painting was donated by Courbet's sister. Courbet was a realistic pinter. Proudhom is considered the "father of French socialism", and died in 1865. He was a very close friend of Courbet. X-ray of the painting show that Proudhom's wife had originally been in the painting, but had been painted over. This is thought to be because the couple were no longer on good terms. The wife believing that Proudhom should be doing more for women.
